The balance wheel is the part of a mechanical watch that actually keeps time - it oscillates back and forth several times a second, and that steady tick is what turns a spring's stored energy into an accurate reading of the hour. Almost every watch buries it behind a solid dial. CIGA Design's open balance wheel watches don't. The balance wheel sits right on the dial side, visible and moving, so you're watching the actual mechanism that makes the watch work, not just the hands it drives.
This page covers CIGA Design's open balance wheel models specifically - watches where that oscillating wheel is built into the dial layout as a visible, functioning feature, not tucked away on the case-back where most exhibition windows put it. If you're here to buy a CIGA Design open balance wheel watch online, every listing comes through authorised stock, so the CIGA Design open balance wheel watch price shown is what you'll actually pay at checkout.
Most “see-through” mechanical watches show you the movement from the back, through a case-back window, after you take the watch off your wrist to look. CIGA Design's open balance wheel pieces put that motion front and center instead - the wheel sits on the dial itself, usually held in an exposed cage or bridge, ticking away in full view every time you glance at your wrist. It's the difference between a mechanism you occasionally check and one you're looking at constantly, whether you mean to or not.
That front-facing placement is a genuine design and engineering choice, not just a stylistic flourish. Building a dial layout around a functioning balance wheel means the hour and minute indicators have to work around it rather than through the center, which is why open balance wheel watches often use offset or sub-dial time displays instead of a conventional center-mounted hand set. CIGA Design leans into that constraint rather than hiding it - the wheel becomes the visual anchor of the whole watch face.
A few things define this collection specifically:
● The balance wheel as the dial's centerpiece. Rather than a supporting detail, the oscillating wheel is the focal point of the watch face on every model in this collection.
● Time displays built around the mechanism. Because the wheel occupies dial space a conventional watch would use for hands, these models typically use offset hour and minute sub-dials rather than a standard center-mounted layout.
● Constant, visible motion. The wheel's steady back-and-forth oscillation is visible at a glance any time the watch is running - a level of mechanical visibility most watches only offer through a case-back window.
A handful of layouts and finishes account for most of what buyers gravitate toward in this collection:
Centered balance wheel with offset time display. The wheel sits in the middle of the dial, hour and minute indication pushed to one side in a sub-dial. This is the layout most people picture first when they search CIGA Design open balance wheel watch price - it's the clearest expression of the design concept and usually the most recognizable model in the collection.
Skeletonised cases paired with an open balance wheel. These combine the front-facing wheel with additional visible mechanics elsewhere in the case, giving an even fuller view of the movement than the balance wheel alone provides.
Colored or finished balance bridges. A few models add a color accent or distinct finish to the bridge or cage holding the balance wheel, making the moving component stand out even more clearly against the rest of the dial.
Legibility is worth checking more carefully in this collection than most - because the time display is offset rather than centered, how easily you can read the hour and minute at a glance varies by model. It's worth looking closely at the dial layout photos on each product page before ordering, particularly if you want a watch you can read quickly rather than one you'll study.
Watches with a functioning open balance wheel generally sit toward the higher end of CIGA Design's catalogue. Building a dial layout around a visible, working component is more demanding than a standard dial construction, and that added complexity is reflected in the CIGA Design open balance wheel watch price compared with the brand's more conventional dial designs.
Exact figures vary by model, case material, and the taxes applied at the time of purchase, so treat any price mentioned here as a general guide - the specific product page always carries the accurate, current number.
A few things move price within this collection:
1. Dial and movement complexity - a layout built around a visible, functioning balance wheel costs more to engineer and assemble than a standard dial.
2. Case material - titanium models run above their stainless steel equivalents, consistent with the rest of CIGA Design's range.
3. Additional visible mechanics - models that pair the open balance wheel with further skeletonisation or exposed gearing typically carry a premium over a simpler single-feature design.
If you're comparing CIGA Design watches price across this collection against the brand's other lines, expect open balance wheel models to generally sit above the standard automatic range, driven mainly by the added mechanical and dial-construction complexity.
A watch built around a visible, functioning component involves a few extra considerations beyond a standard dial choice:
How easily do you want to read the time? Because the time display sits offset rather than centered, glance-and-read speed varies by model. If quick legibility matters more to you than the mechanical display itself, look closely at how each specific layout positions its hour and minute indicators.
How much of the mechanism do you want visible? Some models keep the open balance wheel as the single standout feature; others pair it with broader skeletonisation across the case. Decide whether you want one clear focal point or a fuller mechanical display.
What's the daily-wear consideration? These are still built as everyday mechanical watches, but a more intricate dial construction is generally something to treat a little more carefully than a simple solid-dial automatic - normal wear is fine, but it's not the watch you'd want to wear for rough outdoor work.
Steel or titanium? The usual CIGA Design trade-off applies - steel costs less and feels more substantial on the wrist, titanium costs more and wears lighter, and the choice comes down to which you notice more over a full day.
Hour Studio stocks CIGA Design's open balance wheel collection as part of a wider mechanical watch selection, sourced through the same authorised channels as every other brand on the site. Every listing carries standard manufacturer warranty coverage, and orders are tracked from dispatch through to delivery.
Because the dial layout in this collection is less conventional than a standard watch face, it's worth spending a few extra minutes with the product photos to see exactly how each model displays the time before ordering. If a spec or layout detail needs clarifying, reach out to support before checkout. Filter by case material or price if you already know roughly what you're after.

What exactly is an open balance wheel?
It's the oscillating component that regulates a mechanical watch's timekeeping, made visible on the front of the dial instead of hidden behind it. Most watches keep this part concealed; CIGA Design's open balance wheel collection builds the dial layout specifically to show it in motion.
Is the balance wheel purely decorative, or does it actually do something?
It's fully functional. The visible balance wheel on these watches is the same working component that regulates timekeeping in any mechanical watch - it's genuinely oscillating and doing its job, not a static decorative element.
Are these watches harder to read than a standard watch?
Somewhat, depending on the model. Because the time display is typically offset rather than centered to make room for the visible balance wheel, glance-and-read speed varies - check the specific dial layout on the product page if quick legibility matters to you.
Are CIGA Design open balance wheel watches automatic?
Yes. These are mechanical, self-winding watches - the visible balance wheel is part of the automatic movement itself, not an added feature bolted onto a quartz engine.
Why is the CIGA Design open balance wheel watch price higher than some of CIGA Design's other collections?
Building a dial layout around a visible, functioning component adds engineering and assembly complexity compared with a standard dial, and that's reflected in the price. Case material and additional visible mechanics can add further to that baseline.
Is it safe to buy a CIGA Design open balance wheel watch online through Hour Studio?
Yes. Stock is sourced through authorised channels, every listing carries manufacturer warranty terms, and orders are tracked from dispatch through delivery.
Where can I check the exact CIGA Design watch price before ordering?
Each product page lists the current, accurate price for that specific model, case material, and any applicable taxes at checkout - more reliable than any general range for planning a purchase.
Do all the models in this collection show the balance wheel the same way?
No - placement, size, and finishing of the visible balance wheel vary by model, and some pair it with additional exposed mechanics elsewhere on the dial or case. Check the individual product page for the specific layout.
