Citizen Watches

Citizen Watch Co. traces its roots to 1918, when Tokyo's Shokosha Watch Research Institute produced the pocket watch that gave the company its name. Shimpei Goto, then mayor of Tokyo, named the timepiece Citizen in the hope that accurate, well-made watches would become something ordinary people could own, not just a luxury reserved for the wealthy. Headquartered in Nishitokyo, Japan, the company went on to launch the world's first light-powered analog quartz watch in 1976 and introduced Eco-Drive, its signature light-powered movement, in 1995. Over more than a century, Citizen has built a reputation for dependable Japanese engineering at an accessible price, backed by continuous investment in movement technology rather than seasonal design trends.

A Citizen watch is a Japanese-engineered timepiece built around dependable quartz or light-powered Eco-Drive movements rather than mechanical complexity or luxury pricing. Citizen watches are designed for daily wear, combining accurate quartz timekeeping, stainless steel construction, and, in Eco-Drive models, a rechargeable cell that runs on any light source, so the watch never needs a battery replacement.

Key Features:

•      Trusted Japanese watchmaking since 1918

•      Eco-Drive movement recharges from any light source, indoors or outdoors

•      No battery replacement needed on Eco-Drive models

•      Radio-controlled timekeeping on select models for atomic-accurate timing

•      Stainless steel cases built for daily handling

•      Chronograph function for timing and everyday utility

•      Accessible pricing relative to build quality and technology

•      Dial and strap options for both men and women

•      Backed by official manufacturer warranty

The defining feature of a Citizen watch is Eco-Drive: a light-powered movement that converts sunlight or ordinary indoor light into stored energy through a cell hidden beneath the dial. Citizen introduced Eco-Drive in 1995 and paired it with radio-controlled timekeeping in 2002, letting select models sync automatically to atomic time signals. A fully charged Eco-Drive watch can run for months without direct light exposure and never needs a battery swap, which sets it apart from most quartz watches in the same price range.

Match the watch to how it will actually be worn:

•      Movement: choose quartz for a lower upfront cost and a simple battery swap every one to two years, or Eco-Drive to remove the battery question entirely

•      Case size: 38-40mm reads dressier and fits under a cuff, 42mm and above suits a sportier, larger-wrist look

•      Dial colour: black, navy, and white pair with the widest range of outfits; green and brown work best as a second watch

•      Water resistance: check the exact rating on the product page before swimming or diving, since it varies by model

A Citizen watch is a good fit if you:

•      Want dependable Japanese engineering without luxury-watch pricing

Are Citizen watches good quality for the price?

Yes, Citizen sits in the mid-range of Japanese watchmaking, using in-house quartz and Eco-Drive movements built for daily reliability rather than collector-grade finishing, which is why the brand is a common recommendation for a first serious watch or a dependable daily-wear piece.

How long does an Eco-Drive watch hold its charge?

A fully charged Eco-Drive watch typically runs for several months to over a year without any light exposure, depending on the model, so a watch left in a drawer for a normal stretch of time is usually still running when it is picked back up.

Do Citizen watches need a battery?

Quartz Citizen watches need a standard coin-cell battery replaced roughly every one to two years, while Eco-Drive models never need a battery because they recharge from light.
